Apart from its bass line-up the AMPG brand has stayed in the shadows of Fender and other better known US brands. But there are many good reasons to bring it to the spot light. And among all the classic diamond tolex era AMPG guitar amps the most iconic one seems to be the GEM I.
It used to be one of the amps favorited by top Jazz players in Chicago and elsewhere in US. It indeed has a very unique, full and bubbly clean sound that sounds great with a guitar tone dialed back or with the responsive tone stack dialed back for warmer tones.
It is also well known as one of the most used amps by the Black Keys, which is one of my all time favorite bands. Just as with cleans, this amp really excells also with a very unique and usable crunch tone that has a distinctive bite and lots of strong bottom end to back it up.
The edge of breakup tones are probably my favorite part about this amp, which is where the big headroom and available top-end bite get into a beautiful synergy for some BF style tones, but with warmer and and fuller mids.
The amp was tracked through the 1X12 cab of the GEM I combo featuring an original Jensen P12R, the mics used are 2X Royer R121, 1X Beyerdynamic M160 and 1X Neumann U87.
The set includes 22 amp+cab captures ranging from clean to Lead. Please refer to the table under the product pics for detailed info on each capture.
